Not just a pretty place - Y Glyn has a mystery, too.

Above: Alun (Y Glyn) and Tom (Bryniog) look for signs of a site on the rocks where Tom remembers, years ago, seeing people gathered as if in worship.

An observer said: Tom remembers as a child seeing people praying at a rock face in Alan's land. On inspecting the rock we discovered six carved steps going up to a carved-out arch the same shape as a bishop's hat with a flat base. Tom also remembers people kneeling in front of it. I have also discovered there were no Catholic churches in the area until the 1950s. My theory is that mass was held there because there was no church then.

This is an artist's impression of the site, showing the steps and the alcove in the rock:

Pat Rowley said: December 1 1901 Father Trebaol said the first Mass in Llanrwst for centuries. Father Trebaol was a BRETON; he came to Wales in 1900 and left in 1914, called back to France to act as Chaplain in WW1.

He was an oblate missionary from Brittany . Spoke fluent Welsh and all services conducted in Welsh and Latin [no English spoken].

His Church was called St Tudwals where MEADOWSWEET is today.

The White Sisters, a religious teaching order, also came in 1903. They lived for a while in the Priory. House also known as THE COTTAGE on Llanddoget Road.

Thanks to Pat Rowley for that information.

Pat also said: There used to be a Rev O'Donavan who was interested - I don't know whether he is still alive!
Does anybody know?

The artist has added a detail to the painting to illustrate his theory:

Is he right? Can anyone throw any light on the reason for the steps, the alcove, and people gathering and kneeling at the site?
