When she went to a home in Rhos on Sea, Annie went to visit her more often. Elizabeth Ann would talk about Nant y Rhiw. She married Robert Jones from Llanrwst and moved to Penoros.

Wil Bod Wylim with the sheep at Ffrith Nannau. The sheep are marked WE for William Evans and are still marked the same today, over fifty years since the younger William Evans (Fronwen) died. The 'nod clust' (ear clipping for ownership identification) was passed down from Tyddyn Rhisiart/Richard to Fronwen. In times past the local Eisteddfodau would have a competition for notebooks containing these markings. There would be a diagram of a sheep's ear with the particular pattern of clipping, each shape of which had a name. The name of the farm would be entered alongside the diagram of the ear. These were done as neatly as possible, and entered in a special section in the competitions. The main purpose of the notebooks was for the new generation of farmers in all the neighbourhood properties to be able to recognise at a glance whose animal any stray might be.

WIL’S FAMILY - GAMEKEEPERS FOR BRYN DYFFRYN
According to the 1901 census, William Roberts (father of Wil, Mary's husband) was head of the household, was aged 48 years, and worked as a Gamekeeper. He spoke both Welsh and English, and had been born at Gwytherin in about 1853. His Welsh-speaking wife, Margaret, was 36 and had been born at Llanfair about 1865. They lived in Llansannan early in their marriage, and this is where Jane (Jennie) was born around 1888. They moved to Llangernyw, and lived there for about four years. Then they moved to Llanrwst, probably to work for the Moulsdales at Bryn Dyffryn, Melin y Coed, and live in Ysgoldy close by. Their son William was born 14 February 1892, Robert 1896, Mary 1898, and Catherine in 1880. William used to help his father in his gamekeeping work. Their other children were Hugh, John and Margaret. There was also a son, Michael, who worked at Bryn Dyffryn until he had a quarrel with the coachman and hit him. His days at Bryn Dyffryn over, Meic, as he was known, moved to London and raised a family. Margaret senior moved to Penrhynside in later years to be with her older daughter Annie (not shown above) and lived in a cottage there, Ty'r Ardd; also it's believed that she lived with her grandson, John Bryn Mor, at one stage in her old age.

Cipar Thomas Owen Jones, Ty Newydd, Nant y Rhiw. His children are in the school photos above. His surviving daughter didn't own a photo of her father at all until this one arrived in the post from Australia. She and Annie Ceridwen were the best of friends since schooldays (above) and still keep in touch. When Annie's father William Evans had given up gamekeeping and Mr Jones was gamekeeping for Major Woods of Betws y Coed, the new Cipar called one morning to have a chat with Dei, who had caught a pheasant the night before. Dei was still in bed. "I don't think I'll say anything to him," said William Evans. "Tommy got up to plenty of mischief himself when I was 'Keeper." ("Oedd Tomi yn neud digon o ddryga pan o'n i yn Gipar.l") The incident passed without further action.

Joseph Williams, Gorsedd Grucyn, with Welsh mountain ponies. These small, hardy ponies were sold for work in mines and harbours.

One of the big occasions of the year in the tops was the Cyfarfod Pregethu in Nant y Rhiw, when ministers from other chapels were invited to a special festival of preaching on a Wednesday and Thursday in January. After the services, attendees would be invited to local homes for a meal. Ellen Ann of Fronwen used to like to have the house painted before the Cyfarfod Pregethu. The Berry family of Llanrwst used to visit Fronwen for tea after the Cyfarfod. Mr Berry was good friends with William Evans, and young John Berry was interested in the horses and ponies.

Up in Tan y Graig, Mr Isaac Morris would have his hair cut every year especially for the Cyfarfod Pregethu. His hair was so thick that scissors wouldn't cut through it, so William Evans used to ride up and cut it for him - with sheep shears. Mr Morris' daughter died, and he raised his grand-daughter Maria, who married Arthur Bryniog and later lived in Penrallt. Their son was John Penrallt, and their grandson lives in Soflen.

Not everybody agreed with having a Cyfarfod Pregethu - Thomas Jones of Garth y Pigau felt people should go to chapel every Sunday instead, and that money was short enough without having to pay visiting preachers. The preachers would not necessarily be of the same denomination as the chapel.

Above: Mrs Roberts Foty and Ellen Ann Evans of Fronwen are second and third from the left in the back row.

The three photos above were taken on 26 May 1932 and are thought to have been on the occasion of a Cyfarfod Pregethu; the minister, Mr J D Jones of Melin y Coed, was being entertained at Foty Fawr.
