Families in the area often moved from one community to another close by in the course of their lives, as they do now. Penmachno lies to the west of Capel Garmon and Betws y Coed across the A5 and the River Conwy; the road to Penmachno is down the hill from the Greanllyn, Penrhyddion and Cefn Rhydd area, and Betws is west of Mynydd Garthmyn, Gwninger, Tan y Foel and Pentre Bach and Pentre Mawr.

Looking for a black sheep in Penmachno?

www.lhywelroberts.northwalesblogs.co.uk contains interesting and helpful information to do with Family and Local History.

Hywel Roberts found helpful historical documents among his father's effects.

The Gwynedd Family History Society (Canolfan yr Aelwyd, Stryd yr Eglwys, Caernarfon, LL55 1SW) have published the transcriptions of memorial inscriptions on cemetery gravestones, along with a plan of the gravesites in St Tudclud's churchyard, and they also publish a journal, Gwreiddiau Gwynedd (Gwynedd Roots).

Hywel Roberts mentions this road junction in his blog.

Owen Gethin Jones, Ei Fywyd a'i Feiau is another book worth tracking down.

Owen Gethin Jones (1816-83) was a poet and local historian who wrote three essays in "Gweithiau Gethin", about Penmachno, Dolwyddelan and Ysbyty Ifan.

In partnership with his brother in law, William Jones, and nephew Owen Jones, Gethin was a building and civil engineering contractor.

Pont Gethin, a viaduct taking the railway across the Lledr Valley, is one of his contracts.

I'm sending my photo taken in Bangor the day of the Sasiwn (association, meeting). The preaching was marvellous Lewis, it turned into rejoicing with John Williams BS in the afternoon. You would have been delighted if you'd been there. John H. recites the sermons often, Mr Williams has a reading meeting twice a week. Preparing for the school meeting. Best wishes to you Jane Nell. How are little Jane and Anne.

Above: Kate of Hightown / Maes Gwyn, Wrexham, thought to have been a cousin of Catherine Ellen Andrew. Kate, whose married name may have been Evans, raised Charles, Louie (seen on the wedding photo of William Andrew and Catherine Ellen) and Frank by adoption. Charles became a sailor. Louie married Francis, a soldier; she died of cancer aged about 40. Kate was so hard on Frank as a child that he would cry if he got dirt on his clothes, because she would punish him. The other children were so sorry for him that they hid from him when they were playing, because they knew that if he got his clothes dirty, as he inevitably would, Frank would be in trouble. Kate used to shake him. Once, when he got his socks dirty, the children tried to wash the dirt off, but only made it worse, which was worse for Frank. He was so thin that one of the cousins used to call him "scarecrow". In time Frank Evans worked for a newspaper in Wrexham, and worked his way up. Last time he was heard of was via a friendly note included in a delivery of books from Cardiff to the Nant y Rhiw chapel.
